Look Good To Feel Good

Culottes - They're Back In Style

If the very name of this made you say "huh?", you're not alone. But that's probably a good thing because it means you're too young to remember when culottes were popular. But believe me, they were. And they've come back in various forms since they're more popular days.

OK, time for a little explanation. One of the most sought after fashions of the sixties and seventies was culottes. Many active housewives loved them for their versatility. It was the movement, look, and dressiness of a longer skirt with the modesty of pants. You could drop little Jimmy off at school, run errands, and attend an exercise class all without changing your clothes or worrying about revealing too much because culottes kept everything covered while making the owner of the culottes look a little more "put together" than if she wore say a sweat suit or jeans and a t-shirt. Culottes had a more dressy quality.

By the eighties the trend had cooled considerably and this shorter version of pants was seen as a rather dated look. Many women were afraid to wear culottes because of the stigma attached to them. Culottes were seen as a "courageous" fashion choice. Women who wore culottes were seen as rather frumpy. Only women whose styles were still stuck in the sixties and seventies wore them. For a long time most women wanted nothing to do with culottes.

Of course, designers don’t really like to let any out dated style rest in peace. Show me an older style and I’ll show you a designer who wants to resurrect that style. Sooner or later every style is brought back by someone who romanticizes that era. This was the case with culottes.

Of course everything has to change, you can't just bring things back as they were. It must be updated. It must be hip. And most of all, it must appeal to a whole new generation.

The problem was what to call them so women would look at them and buy them without prejudice. They came up with a new name and new updated style for culottes called a skort. Instead of a longer divided skirt ending in the middle of a ladies leg, an unflattering length for most women, they are shorter and look like a mini skirt but have shorts underneath it so that movement is possible without being immodest.

Ladies loved them. The skorts were a hit. They were seen as a bold fashion choice that combined modesty, sexiness, and style all at once. A nice thing about them is that ladies can wear skorts shorter than they would ever dare to with a skirt.

Women these days wear skorts just as ladies in generations before us wore culottes. They do a little light gardening, run errands, and go to church all while looking great but everything that should be covered is. It makes an especially appealing outfit for summer gathering where one wants to dress up but still feel cool instead of overheated.

This new fashion staple can be one of the most versatile pieces of clothing in your closet. You may wear a pair of black culottes with a t-shirt and sandals for more casual gatherings and switch to a dressier type of blouse and shoes for a more formal occasion and no one will be the wiser. Give the culottes a chance in your closet today; you won’t be sorry you did.

And no one will look at you and call you outdated either. You'll look good, and you'll feel good as well.
