You may have noticed that here at look good to feel good, we really tend to like the color black. We've written several articles on black dresses. But why stop there? Black skirts can also make a stunning addition to your wardrobe.
Looking through my wardrobe I notice a strange phenomenon. I seem to have a great variety of clothing, in all different colors and styles, but the one category where there is no diversity to be found at all is in my selection of skirts. I seem to only own black skirts. Each skirt is a different style, but they all have in common that they are black. I have many pairs of different black pants, but I also have a wide variety of pants in other colors too. But when I look over to the side where I keep my dress clothes, it’s like gazing into a sea of black skirts.
Black skirts are a great staple to have in your closet, because they can be paired with almost everything. I seem to have taken this fashion tidbit and turned it into a religion of my closet, to the exclusion of all other colors. I have slip skirts, leather skirts, long skirts and short skirts, and they all vary a bit in style from each other. That still doesn’t change the fact that I have fifteen black skirts and I have no idea how I accumulated them all.
I think I know why I have almost subconsciously accumulated what seems to be a collection of black skirts. The biggest most obvious benefit is the color itself. Black is slimming, sexy, timeless and elegant. And as an added bonus, I can wear almost any color top with them and still look good.
Whenever I go shopping I am always on the lookout for perfect wardrobe staples like the perfect white blouse or the perfect gray sweater. Those items of clothing that you see on the hanger in the store and you know they will be your favorite. You can wear a staple a lot more than you can wear a trendy piece because a staple sort of blends into the background. A trendy piece is an item of clothing you will probably get compliments on, but cannot wear all the time because people will think it’s all you own. I guess this may explain how I’ve ended up owning so many black skirts.
The interesting thing about my dilemma of too many black skirts is the fact that I rarely wear skirts to begin with. I like to be comfortable when I sit, and this usually means wrapping my legs in a pretzel around the chair I’m sitting in or folding them up on my lap as though I am about to begin yoga. I don’t know where this comes from, but I find it virtually impossible to sit like a lady for longer than fifteen minutes without feeling like I need to bend and stretch and move my legs around. Something you should never do in a skirt.
But in those occasions when a skirt is definitely called for, well obviously black is my choice. That doesn't mean I don't have a choice however. As I said, I have about 15 of them. And each one is a unique style or fabric. It's actually pretty amazing that you can get plenty of variety from black skirts. And while I don't recommend you run out and buy 15 of them, it's a good idea to have a few in your closet. It will make it easy for you the answer the question you probably ask yourself often, "What should I wear tonight?".
